We went to Scorrier on Sunday for a little bit of schooling with Mum and Maddie and it was so cool!

It was Maddie’s party the day before so once we had dropped off all her friends we went back home and started to

get the ponies ready at about 2pm. Blue was filthy! He had rolled in the wet mud the day before and it had all soaked

down into his skin, so he was really muddy and dusty! Once I had brushed, bathed and dried Blue, we left and head off to Scorrier Cross Country Course in Redruth.

The night before we had called the owners of the course and told them that we were coming, but she said that there was a show on the same day held by Gwenap Riding Club. We arrived and the car park was packed because of the Gwenap show, this was a parking nightmare but it was also a really good experience for Blue to be around lots of other horses and ponies. When we had tacked up and walked through all the other ponies and then went past the show jumping courses, we headed down into the first Cross Country field. I began to warm up by walk, trot and cantering up and down the hill and in some circles.

We then walked up the hill into another field and generally jumped all the jumps that were not HUGE! We continued to jump everything and went through the next few fields, jumping Walls, logs, skinnies, banks and awkward poles. Once we had been all the way to the end of the course we came back into the next field and went for a so called gallop along the top of the field and over a small course of jumps.

This little course included some tyres, a funny log thing, a puddle, a rather big double, a small log and the the 3FT TYRES! Blue went clear through everything until we came to the Big Tyres where he refused 5 times before finally jumping it! I was soo happy after that! We continued to go through more fields jumping over some logs and a sunken road with some steps either side, which Blue did not like. After about 10 attempts of trying to get Blue down a step I eventually walked down the slope on the side of the step and jumped up the other side, once Blue had done this he was happy to jump down the step that he had just jumped up. We contined through the field and I jumped a log again, and then to a skinny zig zag thing that Blue went clear over first time. The next field looked like two small logs but I soon found out that they were trekaners when blue stopped at them.

After about 20 minuets I realised that Blue was not going to go over the Trekaner and mum said that we didn’t want to put him off them for life so we stopped. On our way back we went down the steps and then up them again before heading down to the water which was a whole different story! Lets just say that Blue is not a big fan of water and prefers to go around it. He would not even put a foot in the water so mum had to get wet and lead Maddie through which was good because Blue then followed, after being led through Blue did go through again, but decided to jump in to walk in! So overall we have concerned pretty much everything at Scorrier Cross Country Course! So I had a very good schooling day!

Wow, the first day of Tet camp has been great!

I love this camp even more than last year! So we left at about 2pm but I was up and outside at about 10am finishing my packing and getting all our gear into the car. (By our stuff I mean Blues stuff and mine). At about 5:30pm we arrived and I unloaded Blue and introduced him to Stockland Lovell Manor! I was in stable number 35, which was next to Ella and her newish pony Buster and Caitlin and Flash. This was great for Blue as he had met both Buster and Flash at previous rally’s so that was a good bonus. Blue was very relaxed and seemed to like Buster and Flash which was good as we did not want any squabbling between the new stable mates.

So once our ponies were all settled in Ella and I headed down to the portacabins and got all our stuff on to our beds. Ella and I were sharing a bunk-bed in the corner off the room, while Olivia was in the other corner and Jess and Caitlin had the two single beds. The parents said goodbye so Ella and I unpacked and then started to make our way down to the Kitchen for a safety meeting and a drink. After our safety meeting with the Stockland Lovell Manager we went into the games room and played ping pong and then some table football. We went to feed and check the ponies at 7pm and they were all fine and settled in well. I filled up Blue’s water buck and gave him some more hay, before heading back down to the Kitchen with Ella and Jess for Dinner. Which was Roast Turkey and Pavlova and it was very nice!

After dinner we are not allowed to go back and see the ponies so we spend most of our time either in the Games room, the TV room or our Cabins. We all had great fun that night, because we were playing Man hunt and Sardines! The great part was the fact that Ella and I found ourselves hiding on the roof of a shower block with Grace, Alice and Luke!

Ah a great first day at Tet Camp!

The portacabins are fully carpeted and heated! The stables are in an American style barn with over 25 stables and the cross country course is meant to be one of the best in the South West. We are staying for three nights and four days so it should give us lots of time to practice our shooting and running as well as five cross country training sessions.

Ahh I’m so excited! I will create more blogs about the camp as soon as I get back!

Last year hay prices rose dramatically — and have remained high. A dry spring and wet summer this year, as well as a high export trade to Europe due to a poor harvest there, have led to more problems. And there are warnings of further price hikes as the winter goes on.

According to the Hay and Straw Merchants Association (HSMA), hay prices are highest in the eastern counties, at around £110 per tonne. The cheapest can be found in Scotland, at £60 per tonne. Livery yard owner John Shears from Kent told H&H he’s seen a more than 100% rise in the past two years. “It went up massively last year and has risen again,” he lamented. “I can’t pass this on to my liveries, so have had to swallow the cost. “You can understand the yield is down so they need to raise prices, but some farmers are opportunists. It’s like ‘hay wars’ — we’re being held to ransom by the suppliers.”

Supplier Richard Wade from JR Wade and Sons, Notts, said he’s had to put prices up by around 80% over the past three years. “We have plenty of demand, but the supply’s just not there,” he told H&H. “Unfortunately, we have had to raise prices and turn down custom. I can definitely see it getting worse over the winter.”

And farmers say the rising costs of harvesting are having an effect on hay and straw prices. Ben Bonnett from Top Grass Haylage, Cambs, added: “Fuel costs combined with low grass yields mean prices had to increase for us to remain in business.”

At the peak in March, the national average wholesale price was £130 per tonne, but in November this had dropped to around £90, the HSMA reported. And April Gingell from HSMA told H&H that hay prices haven’t risen since last year and have even gone down in some areas — such as Scotland. She added that prices “nearly always” increase as the winter goes on, but stresses that people shouldn’t panic. “There’s massive demand, but what we’re hearing from merchants is that the stock is available,” she said.
